I have read many articles about ‘smart’ design. I am tired. Very free of them give me a hint. No need to mention ‘smart’ ships. Or autonomous ships if you want to label them. For me, all these work are about misapplication of technology. No current autonomous ships can solve all navigation scenarios without human intervention by understanding case/effect and adapting to changing situation. I can continue typing more arguments; however, today I find an inspiration work. So let’s me introduce a smart city design project. The work is done by Dr. Ding Wang. Enjoy!

The literature shows that current maritime technology does not purely support cooperative work among operators on board . The current design of operator–vessel interaction follows the principles of engineering design, including cognitive ergonomics and human factors . The fundamental principle is to focus on the design applicability, the scope of the technical process, and the system structures to support the efficacy of machine use . Operators are subjects in experimental work conducted to verify that a design is successful. However, the social aspects of human–vessel interaction have been largely dismissed. Moreover, operators are not encouraged to articulate their requirements, and…
People argue for a century that whether technology is an applied science or not. I was also told that I am not doing applied science since I pay too much attention to basic science. Even I heard extreme argument that basic science is useless in 21st century.
Really? I think I do not need to say too much to defense it. Let’s see how does Vannevar Bush say about this:
Basic research … creates that fund from the practical applications of knowledge must be drawn. New products and new processes do not appear full-grown. They are founded on new principles…
I would like to share a report which is written by a researcher union in Norway. The report is about embedded discrimination and career Tips for junior researchers who want to work in a Norway. The report is about 4 mins to read.
Now I can formally say hello 2021. Happy new year!
It will be a very busy January. It is honorably to serve the flagship conference as a PC member. The means 4 to 5 paper must be reviewed plus the reviewers’ comments. At the same time, two manuscripts were accepted to the world premier conferences. That means I need to run fast to revise and resubmit two articles plus two ‘rebuttals’. Not really rebuttals but more conceivable list of changes. Thanks go to many people, for anonymization, I won’t list them here. You all helped me so much in CHI…
This song can be used to conclude my 2020. It is a Chinese song but I know you can feel the power of the song and the singer.
